Sleep plays an important role in our physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of our heart and blood vessels.
Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.
Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you’re sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. If you’re sleep deficient, you may have trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling your emotions and behavior, and coping with change.
Sleep deficiency also has been linked to depression, suicide, and risk-taking behavior.
BANANA TEA – DR. OZ’S RECIPE
– 1 raw banana
– 1 small pot of water
– cinnamon (optional)
Directions: Cut off both ends of the banana and place it into boiling water. Boil for about 10 minutes. Using a colander, pour the water into a mug, sprinkle the cinnamon (optional) into the tea and drink it one hour before bed. You can also eat the banana and its peel.
Bananas help promote sleep because they contain the natural muscle-relaxants magnesium and potassium. They also contain the amino acid L-tryptophan, which convert to serotonin and melatonin, the brain’s key calming hormones.
It is also a source of melatonin, which is known as the “sleep hormone.” As melatonin levels increase, you begin to feel drowsy, which may help you fall asleep.
